The first staging of The Digital Swiss 5 was organized by the UCI WorldTour stage race Tour de Suisse and Velon, an association of cycling teams. The race was related to the cancellation of the 2020 Tour de Suisse due to the COVID 19 pandemic.
Three cyclists from each of the UCI WorldTeams started, with the exception of Astana Pro Team, Cofidis and UAE Team Emirates, plus the UCI ProTeams Rally Cycling and Total Direct Énergie and a national team from Swiss Cycling. Teams could change riders from day to day, so it was not an E stage race, but a series of E one-day races. Therefore, there was no individual overall ranking.
Unlike road cycling and other online platforms, the Rouvy online training platform on which the competitions took place does not offer slipstreaming, so they are effectively e-single time trials.
